Optimism, positive attitude and hard work is the key to success
If we look at the life of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi, each chapter of his life is inspiring and full of challenges. From a tea seller to leading the world’s largest democracy, there are many aspects we can learn from. He has indeed scripted a success story that can inspire each one of us. What is remarkable about him is that at every difficult juncture in his life, he had the courage to extract a positive outcome from the negatives.
Modi’s positive and realistic attitude is depicted in his perception of a half-filled glass that to him, always seems filled to the brim. While the bottom half of the glass is filled with water, he believes that the top half is filled with air. This shows his optimism, positivity, and attitude towards life.
Modi’s love for country shows in the policies and schemes initiated by him and some very tough decisions taken to root out the corruption from the country. But the journey to becoming the prime minister of world’s second last democracy was not easy.
A childhood laced with struggles and dreams
Born on 17th September 1950, to Hira-ba and Damodaran Modi, Narendra Modi had modest beginnings in his life. He belonged to a family of grocers and his father struggled as a street merchant to support the family. Narendra Modi, being the third child among six siblings, spent his early years helping his father in selling tea along with his brother. He completed his schooling in Vadnagar, a small town in Gujarat. Even in his schooling years and immediately thereafter he made a living selling tea to soldiers on the Mehsana Railway Station during the Indo-Pak war.
Though an average student, he was a great debater and always impressed the audience with his views. Modi’s thoughts and ideas were greatly influenced by Buddhist’s learning and spirituality. From the very childhood age, he desired to bring a great difference to the society. This approach later developed his interest in the political life.

In 1971, just after the Indo-Pak war, Modi joined the Rastriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as a propagandist while working in the staff canteen at Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation. His oratorical skills came in handy and it was at this time, that he made a conscious decision to devote himself to politics. Recognizing his contribution in the RSS and his active participation in the anti-emergency movement during 1977, he was given additional responsibilities. Growing step by step, he was soon made in charge of the student wing of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in Gujarat.

The RSS moved him to the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) by seeing the potential in him in 1985. Narendra Modi proved his mettle by standing out at every responsibility entrusted to him at every step and soon made himself indispensable to the party. In 1988, he became the Organizing Secretary of BJP’s Gujarat wing and drove the party to victory in the 1995 state elections. He was thereafter transferred to New Delhi as the National Secretary of BJP.
The journey from Chief Minister of Gujarat to ultimately Prime Minister of India
He became the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001 and has been voted back into power there for four consecutive terms. He was named as the best Chief Minister nationwide in 2007 by ‘India Today’. In fact, his remarkable performance in Gujarat forced the top brass of BJP sitting in New Delhi, to make way for him and posture him as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the party in the 2014 elections. He not only won the hearts of all Indians but also the election and ultimately became the Prime Minister of Democratic India
Some Inspiring and Rare Facts about Modi
- He is workaholic and as Chief Minister of Gujarat for a span of thirteen years, he did not take any leave. Even as Prime Minister of India he has taken no leave and considers himself the Pradhan Sewak of the people of India. He sleeps for only five hours a day or less. No matter what time he goes to sleep he gets up by 5.30 in the morning. He didn’t miss his yoga even when in the US.
- He was a spiritual person from a young age. He left his home in 1967and travelled to Northern and North Eastern India visiting various Hindu Ashrams. He was deeply influenced by teachings of Ram Krishan Param Hans and Swami Vivekananda.
- He is a strict vegetarian, a teetotaler, and doesn’t smoke.
- He is a religious Hindu and fasts all nine days during Navratri every year even while he is travelling.
- He is a style icon and has a preference for traditional Indian attire.
- Modi auctions whatever gifts he receives during his visits. The money is then given to the Kanya Kelavani fund (girl child education fund) – his initiative for girl education.
